Saturday morning—grand opening day—dawned the way every morning had since we’d arrived in Budgerigar, with a clear sky and bone-scorching heat.

My morning run down to what was left of the river had become a chore rather than a pleasure the last couple of days. What was left of the flock had been collected by a buyer, a farmer in Victoria who was lucky enough to own land in an area that had continued to get steady rainfall the past few years.

It was a bitter pill to swallow, taking that run through empty fields, desolate without the bleating and movement of hundreds and hundreds of sheep. I’d taken to letting Jumbo follow me on my run to keep me company—it wasn’t as if there was any reason to shut the gates behind me anymore. But he generally got about two hundred metres or so from the house before his little legs got tired and he headed back.

I forced myself to run until my fit watch showed a good five k’s before I turned and headed back through the paddocks. Sweat dripped down my spine and between my breasts. I pushed wet strands of hair off my face as I glanced over to the tiny home, almost swallowing my tongue when I saw Xander, shirtless, doing push-ups on the timber porch. He was sweaty too, but his sweat was the sexy, glistening beads that clung to taut muscles and drizzled their way down the hills and valleys of defined abs.

His biceps bulged as he grunted through his set, and suddenly it wasn’t just sweat that was making me damp. Those grunting sounds took me back … to a few nights ago … to twelve years ago.

He finished his set and stood, grabbing a water bottle from the chair and taking a long slug. His throat bobbed as he swallowed. My heart pounded as if I were still running.

“Welcome to join in, Blondie,” he called out, and I flinched. I’d been so focused on his body that I hadn’t realised I was standing in full view of him, drinking him in. “Hip thrusters are a fun exercise to do with a friend.”

I threw him what I hoped was a disgusted look, but judging by his smirk, he’d seen right through it. He set himself up, using the edge of the porch to brace his back, planting his feet and thrusting skywards. His grey shorts left nothing to the imagination as he held at the top of his thrust before lowering, his eyes never leaving mine.

I could have sworn that on the next thrust, the bulge in those shorts was … more.

“And there’s the peen silhouette again,” Jord said, approaching with Jase, who was frantically fumbling to get his camera up to capture the action. “Dr Fox is packing, G.”

I huffed out a shaky breath and turned for Mim’s, as Jumbo and Molly came galloping around the corner together.

“Those two have really made friends, haven’t they?” Jord continued, following behind me. “Shame about their owners.
